Don't Let Holiday Hair Loss Haunt You This Season!

Tips for Combatting Seasonal Hair Loss to Keep Your Hair Healthy Through Winter

Let’s face it, the holidays can be a stressful time for a lot of us. Throw in seasonal hair loss, and things can get even more... interesting!

Several factors contribute to fall and winter hair loss, but research shows a few big players take the lead. Let’s dive in and tackle some of the most common causes—and how to keep your hair healthy through the holiday season and beyond.

Nutrition and Hair Health

We all know the holidays bring on some seriously delicious food. But changes in our diet can impact our hair health—sometimes in surprising ways. Health experts actually see an increase in hair loss after the holidays. The biggest culprit? January dieting. Many of us jump into calorie-restricted New Year’s resolutions, but these can lead to nutrient deficiencies that can result in hair loss.

To avoid this, aim to get enough calories, vitamins, and protein throughout the winter. Adding supplements to your routine can help ensure your body gets what it needs, even if you're cutting back on calories.

Cold Weather and Hair Stress

Winter weather can wreak havoc on our hair. Cold, dry air affects scalp health, often leading to dryness and dandruff. When scalp follicles get clogged, it can increase hair shedding. Plus, brittle hair is more likely to break easily. We also tend to rely on heat tools in the winter, which adds another layer of stress, drying out our hair even more.

At Fabrik Salon, we offer a range of treatments that can help keep your hair healthy through the colder months. From deep conditioning and scalp detox services to at-home products for extra hydration, we’ve got everything you need to beat the winter hair blues.

Understanding Your Hair Growth Cycle

Finally, let’s talk about natural hair growth cycles, which are a little harder to manage because they’re part of our biology. Hair goes through three phases:

  • Anagen: The growth phase when the hair follicle produces a new hair shaft. This phase can last from two to seven years, depending on genetics, age, and other factors.

  • Catagen: The transition phase when hair stops growing and detaches from the follicle base, usually lasting one to three weeks.

  • Telogen: The resting phase, when hair doesn’t grow but remains attached to the follicle. This phase can last three to four months.

Certain things can trigger a faster shift from growth to rest phases, like inflammation, hormonal changes, stress, poor diet, lack of sleep, and medications. Added holiday stress, along with inflammation from sugar and processed foods, can speed up this cycle.

Tips to Keep Your Hair Healthy This Holiday Season

Instead of going from holiday feasts to extreme dieting in January (which can shock your body and throw it off balance), try maintaining a consistent, balanced approach to eating throughout the year. Enjoy your holiday meals but aim for consistency to support your body and hair.

Here are a few tips to combat seasonal hair loss and keep your hair hydrated and healthy:

  • Schedule regular deep conditioning treatments and scalp detoxification at Fabrik.

  • Add moisture-rich products to your at-home hair care routine.

  • Use mindful practices and good coping skills this season to reduce stress.

  • Make sure to stay connected to loved ones, and set aside time to be connected and remember what matters.

With a little extra care, you can keep your strands strong, healthy, and ready to shine all winter long! These things can go a long way in improving health and reducing stress, on top of improving the rest of our lives.
